Sustainable bicycle tourism: the EuroVelo routes

Today is Codex-U\'s first day! While your eyes fly over these first few lines, you should know that we’ve inaugurated our blog! We hope we can use it to share concerns, curiosities and doubts with you, and that it helps to enrich us all.

In this first article we’ll be talking about the EuroVelo routes, which unite Europe with 15 long-distance paths. This network of routes is similar to the Greenways we have in Catalonia, only these go through 42 countries and cover over 70,000 kilometres.

You can see all existing routes at www.eurovelo.com. For example, EuroVelo #8, called the Mediterranean Route, is one of three that go through the Iberian Peninsula. More specifically, it unites Cadiz and Cyprus, covering 5,888 kilometres and passing through 11 countries and 23 World Heritage sites, from the lavender fields of Provence to the wonderful town of Mantua or the neolithic settlement of Choirokoitia, in Cyprus.

In addition, on the website you can plan routes by stages, and you can find tourist recommendations, information on where to stay, guides and maps. This European site also helps you find scheduled guided trips or lets you plan routes according to difficulty, distance and type of surface.

Finally, the two organisations in charge of the development and maintenance of these cycling routes are the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) and the National EuroVelo Coordination Centres (NECC), which work together with funding from the European Union.

So now you know: if you feel like bike touring and want to get to know Europe, EuroVelo routes are for you!
